Athanasius, over on Suffering World, has a very interesting post on the subject "Symbols: contrasting stories of a secular tyranny" which you can read here. The basic premise is a contrast between our approach to the wearing of the poppy and that of the cross in the public arena (think football teams with poppies embroidered onto strips and Italians banning the crucifix in the schoolroom) and the ramifications for society as a whole.
